Toe pain is very uncomfortable and can happen for a variety of reasons, including the arthritic condition that is known as gout, or medical reasons such as bunions and hammertoes. Many people can experience toe pain from wearing shoes that do not fit correctly, or if the toe is stubbed against a piece of furniture. The latter reason may result in a broken toe, and it is often difficult to walk. Despite the reason for toe pain, mild relief may be found when the foot is elevated, and weight is kept off it. Treatment can vary, and this depends on the reason for the toe pain. If the toe is broken, the buddy taping method may be effective in keeping the injured toe stable by taping it to the toe next to it. The majority of people that have toe pain choose to wear shoes that may be a bit larger, and this may help to accommodate the injured toe. If you have toe pain, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is, and offer you correct treatment solutions.

How Did I Hurt My Achilles Tendon?

There is no mistaking the discomfort that can happen from enduring an Achilles tendon injury. It is often a sudden, sharp pain that occurs when this tendon becomes torn. It can happen to runners who increase speed and mileage too quickly, often without properly warming up. The Achilles tendon is located in the lower portion of the calf and connects the heel to the calf muscles. This type of injury may also happen while running on hard or uneven surfaces, or if the foot suddenly turns out. In addition to the intense pain this injury can cause, the affected foot may feel stiff in the morning, and is often painful when touched. Treatment often begins by stopping the activity that caused the injury, and a brace or cast may need to temporarily be worn that can provide stability as it heals. If you have had an Achilles tendon injury, it is strongly suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can guide you toward treatment options that are correct for you.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Hugar Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Clubfoot Develops During Pregnancy

A common congenital foot condition is known as clubfoot. It is noticeable as the foot twists downward and inward, and will cause difficulty in walking if not promptly corrected. Research has shown it develops in the later stage of pregnancy, as the baby has limited room to move freely in. The feet may become squashed, which may cause this condition to occur. An effective treatment technique is referred to as the Ponseti method, which can begin soon after birth. It consists of wearing a cast for four to eight weeks and may be replaced during this time as the child grows. Minor surgery may be performed that can lengthen the Achilles tendon. This is followed by wearing a specific type of brace daily for three months until the age of five when the time can be gradually reduced. If your child has been born with clubfoot, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can educate and guide you toward correct treatment methods.

Congenital foot problems require immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Hugar Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Congenital foot problems are deformities affecting the feet, toes, and/or ankles that children are born with. Some of these conditions have a genetic cause while others just happen. Some specific foot ailments that children may be born with include clubfeet, polydactyly/macrodactyly, and cleft foot. There are several other foot anomalies that can occur congenitally. What all of these conditions have in common is that a child may experience difficulty walking or performing everyday activities, as well as trouble finding footwear that fits their foot deformity. Some of these conditions are more serious than others. Consulting with a podiatrist as early as possible will help in properly diagnosing a child’s foot condition while getting the necessary treatment underway.

What are Causes of Congenital Foot Problem?

A congenital foot problem is one that happens to a child at birth. These conditions can be caused by a genetic predisposition, developmental or positional abnormalities during gestation, or with no known cause.

What are Symptoms of Congenital Foot Problems?

Symptoms vary by the congenital condition. Symptoms may consist of the following:

  • Clubfoot, where tendons are shortened, bones are shaped differently, and the Achilles tendon is tight, causing the foot to point in and down. It is also possible for the soles of the feet to face each other.
  • Polydactyly, which usually consists of a nubbin or small lump of tissue without a bone, a toe that is partially formed but has no joints, or an extra toe.
  • Vertical talus, where the talus bone forms in the wrong position causing other bones in the foot to line up improperly, the front of the foot to point up, and the bottom of the foot to stiffen, with no arch, and to curve out.
  • Tarsal coalition, when there is an abnormal connection of two or more bones in the foot leading to severe, rigid flatfoot.
  • Cleft foot, where there are missing toes, a V-shaped cleft, and other anatomical differences.
  • Macrodactyly, when the toes are abnormally large due to overgrowth of the underlying bone or soft tissue.

Treatment and Prevention

While there is nothing one can do to prevent congenital foot problems, raising awareness and receiving neonatal screenings are important. Early detection by taking your child to a podiatrist leads to the best outcome possible.

How Did I Sprain My Ankle?

A sprained ankle can happen in a variety of ways. These can include unexpectedly stepping off a curb, or twisting it during a sporting activity. Regardless of how it happens, a sprained ankle can be painful and cause difficulty completing daily activities. Additional symptoms may include swelling, bruising, and a reduced range of motion. When the foot is frequently elevated, the swelling may decrease, and wrapping the affected ankle in an elastic bandage may help to stabilize the foot. If the sprain is severe, the healing process may take several weeks, and activities may have to be temporarily stopped until enough time has passed. Severely sprained ankles may affect the joints, and it is beneficial to seek immediate medical attention if the foot appears to be deformed. If you have sprained your ankle, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist who can effectively treat this condition.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Hugar Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Podiatric Treatment

A podiatrist will treat the problematic areas of the feet, ankle or lower leg by prescribing the following:

  • Physical therapy
  • Drugs
  • Orthotic inserts or soles
  • Surgery on lower extremity fractures

A common podiatric procedure a podiatrist will use is a scanner or force plate which will allow the podiatrist to know the designs of orthotics. Patients are then told to follow a series of tasks to complete the treatment. The computer will scan the foot a see which areas show weight distribution and pressure points. The podiatrist will read the analysis and then determine which treatment plans are available.
