Juvenile Plantar Dermatosis

Juvenile plantar dermatosis is a common and chronic dry skin condition of the feet that usually affects pre-adolescent children between the ages of three and 14 years. It is also known as atopic winter feet and forefoot dermatitis. This condition affects boys slightly more often than girls. It is rarely seen in adults but can persist into adulthood. Juvenile plantar dermatosis can be caused by repetitive frictional movements, the occlusive effect of wearing covered footwear (particularly synthetic shoes), excessive sweating, genetic sensitivities, or warm or cool climate changes. This problem is usually visible on the weight-bearing areas of the soles, ball of the big toes, and forefoot of the foot with itchy, sore, shiny, red skin that has a glazed appearance and a loss of the epidermal ridge pattern. Typically, both feet are affected. The most common complication of juvenile plantar dermatosis is painful cracks and fissures, which may become infected. This affliction is sometimes confused with other skin conditions, such as atopic eczema, plantar psoriasis, or tinea pedis. Wearing well-fitting leather shoes, two or more pairs of cotton and wool socks, and changing socks regularly will help reduce friction. Moisturizing the feet will help prevent dry skin. Resting the feet to allow any fissures to heal will help as well. If your child is experiencing problems with the skin of their feet, consult with a podiatrist who can diagnose any conditions and provide options for treatment.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

The medical condition known as cracked heels can be uncomfortable. If the cracks in the skin are deep, they are referred to as fissures, and may bleed. It is an ailment that affects the heels, and it is generally caused by having excessively dry skin. This can be a result of the aging process, from wearing shoes that do not have a back, or from standing on hard surfaces for most of the day. There may be existing medical conditions that can lead to cracked heels, including eczema, psoriasis, a thyroid disorder, or a vitamin deficiency. People who are overweight may experience cracked heels, and this can be a result of the added weight the feet must endure. Some of the symptoms associated with cracked heels include flaky skin, bleeding, pain and discomfort. An effective prevention technique includes washing and drying the feet daily followed by applying a good moisturizer. Additionally, it may help to refrain from standing in one position for long periods of time and to wear shoes that have a back. If you have cracked heels, a podiatrist can prescribe effective medicine that can help to manage this condition, and it is suggested that you schedule an appointment.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Changes to the Work Area May Help the Feet

Many people have professions that require standing for the majority of the day. This can produce a variety of foot conditions, including swollen feet and varicose veins, in addition to overall body aches. The feet carry the weight of the body, and it is beneficial to elevate them as often as possible during the work day. When people work on their feet, there are less body positions to choose from. These restrictions limit the freedom to move around. Stretching frequently is suggested, which may be beneficial in improving flexibility. Limited range of motion in the body can reduce the blood supply to the muscles, often resulting in fatigue and muscle pain. There may be positive changes that can be made in the work space. These can consist of adjusting the height of the work table and benches, which may help to improve posture. Relief may be found when there is ample room to move freely, and the position of the body is changed, thus improving blood supply to the muscles. If you have questions about how the feet are affected by standing all day, please confer with a podiatrist who can help you to manage your work area.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Hugar Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

Causes of Pain in the Second Toe

Pain in the second toe can cause a great deal of discomfort, but it is rarely discussed. One of the main causes of second toe pain is capsulitis, which is irritation or inflammation of the ligament capsule at the base of the toe. You may notice pain in the ball of the foot that feels worse when you walk barefoot, swelling in the area, and difficulty putting on or wearing shoes. Causes of capsulitis include improper foot mechanics, bunions, tight calf muscles, a weak arch, or a second toe that is longer than the big toe, which can affect the gait. Sometimes, if a person has capsulitis of the second toe, which causes it to drift toward the big toe, surgery may be required. If the pain associated with the second toe becomes debilitating or interferes with daily activities, it is wise to seek the help of a podiatrist who can diagnose the cause and provide treatment options.

Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact one of our podiatrists of Hugar Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Treatment

Treatments for toe pain and injuries vary and may include shoe inserts, padding, taping, medicines, injections, and in some cases, surgery. If you believe that you have broken a toe, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible.

Massages and Reflexology

A popular form of foot therapy is a foot massage. Many people who have foot pain reap the benefits of getting a foot massage. These can include improved circulation, and relief of stress and pain, in addition to releasing muscle tension. Reflexology started in traditional Chinese medicine, and it is an effective form of foot therapy. It is commonly used to help cancer patients. This is done by touching the feet at specific pressure points and this can create an overall feeling of well-being. This can also stimulate the nervous system and positively affect energy flow. People who have regular reflexology and massage sessions may experience better sleeping patterns, lower blood pressure, and possibly diminished psychological and physical pain. Many people enjoy additional forms of foot therapy, including having a Swedish massage, shiatsu, or Thai massage performed. Massages and reflexology sessions begin by removing the shoes and socks and asking the patient if there are specific areas of pain. If you would like to know more about the benefits of foot massages and reflexology, please consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Foot therapy is often necessary for those recovering from either foot deformities or foot injuries. If you have concerns regarding therapy, consult with one of our podiatrists from Hugar Foot & Ankle Specialists. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Most Common Injuries

People who are active or athletes are prone to a variety of injuries. Therefore, it is often important to take part in physical therapy in order to quickly get back on the right track.

What to Do When Injured

Physical Therapy – This specialized treatment will focus on the affected area, speeding up recovery and the overall healing process. It is a proven method that has helped millions of people return from any injury.

During physical therapy you will undergo regimented training to get back into full form. Training is often very difficult, especially at first when the foot feels weak. Physical therapy often involves:

Basic stretching and twisting exercises – getting the feet’s mobility and flexibility up.

Massaging – the therapist will massage the injured area in order to activate the muscles and relax them.

Strengthening Exercises – this allows the muscles in the affected area to regain their full strength, a vital step towards full recovery.
